I really was not going to even post about this because anyone who states an opinion on this topic that goes against the consensus is being called a delusional fanboy, but I cannot resist.
I do not see this as sleazy.
Truthfully, I see this as a situation where Apple is following the unofficial Windows software development guidelines. The list of applications that either side-jack your install to get on your Windows computer, or offer you an option to install unrelated software during the install process is nearly endless. This is a very common practice with third party Windows software.
Does the fact that everyone does it make it less sleazy?
That is a grey area.
Bundled software is a reality you face when you run Windows. You can either avoid this software altogether or choose not to install the optional software. In some cases, people even install software that comes with other software and offers no option not to install it, then remove the offending piggybacking software. I think many, many Windows users are aware of this situation.
This is a marketing opportunity for Apple. They have provided iTunes as a free application for Windows. They did this because it gets a music store onto your computer and may possibly lead users to go out and purchase an iPod.
This is literally Apple asking “Hey, would you like a free piece of software that you may not have even heard of?”
They are doing this on an operating system where a large majority of the users are using the browser they use only because it comes bundled with their operating system. They are offering an alternative browser to a large market of people who may not have even thought of such a thing. if anything, they are doing a wonderful public service.
Not only is this not a sleazy situation, it is a situation where people are being educated. This is not a bad thing. I can see why people think what they do about this, but I really cannot see eye to eye with you all on this.
